South Africa's gold mines find new life with price surge

STORY: This is South Africa's first new underground gold mine in 15 years.

It's a sign of how a surge in gold prices has made previously uneconomical deposits potentially viable.

The Qala Shallows project is located on the western fringe of Johannesburg, in the legendary Witwatersrand basin.

West Wits mining CEO Rudi Deysel said increasing gold prices meant the mine made "very good" economical sense.

"The Witwatersrand basin produced 40 percent of all gold produced in the world to date. So, that’s a huge number. Geologically, we understand this ore body probably better than any other ore body right over the world. From a confidence point of view there’s a huge confidence in the resource itself."

For more than a century South Africa was the world's biggest gold producer.

But gold exploration has dropped nearly 90% from the 1990s.

Production has plunged to 90 metric tons annually, from a 1970 peak of 1,000.

That's partly due to dwindling economically-viable reserves, labor unrest, and taxing conditions in the world's deepest mines.

But gold’s surge above $5,000 an ounce this year has upended assumptions about South Africa’s mining economics.

Mining and markets analyst Jeffrey Mashiane said, demand has been boosted in part by central banks diversifying away from the U.S. dollar towards gold.

"We’ve had massive, massive purchases of gold by central banks, particularly central banks from emerging markets. So, the purchases exceeded 1,000 tonnes per year in the last four years."

Companies are mostly avoiding the pricey deep-shaft mining of old.

Shallow, high-margin projects are being prioritized.

As are opportunities to recover gold from waste dumps.

::File

South Africa's biggest gold producer, Harmony Gold, has said it is looking to potentially recover 5.7 million ounces through waste retreatment.

But - with no boom in new mine development expected - these projects are unlikely to lift the country's output significantly in the short term.

Its Minerals Council says gold production is set to stay at around 90 metric tons next year, similar levels it has bumped along at for the last few years.

Toyota Deploys 7 Humanoid Robots In A Canadian Factory — But Mark Cuban Says The Current Humanoid Robot Push Could Fail Within 5-10 Years
Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) is moving humanoid robots onto a factory floor in Canada. At the same time, billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban is openly questioning whether the entire idea has staying power. The contrast is hard to ignore. One of the world's largest automakers is scaling up real-world use, while a longtime tech investor is warning the trend could burn out within a decade. Toyota puts humanoid robots to work after a successful trial Last month, Agility Robotics said in a statement that T
